Q: Thank you for your lessons. I have begun practicing meditation again after a long period of disinterest and frustration.

One question about the chin pump. The technique is very similar to a traditional kriya method, with one difference. The attention stays at the point between the eyebrows instead of going down to the heart with each swoop. You mention that the chin pump pumps energy between the head and the heart. How does that happen if the attention stays at the point between the eyebrows?

A: Sambhavi activates the entire sushumna, especially with ecstatic conductivity coming up. This covers the full range from root to brow, including enlivening the energy in the heart area. The chin pump itself is a physical technique, and it is the physicality of it that circulates the enlivened energy between heart and head, and also much broader in the nervous system, as discussed in the AYP lessons. So the physical positioning of eyes (and brow) in sambhavi is opening the full channel, while the physical movement of the head/neck is doing the circulating. The attention traces the spinal nerve up and down on inhale and exhale as in spinal breathing, and stays out the front with sambhavi during breath retention as in yoni mudra kumbhaka. Chin pump lite (an alternate approach also covered in the lessons) does not not involve breath retention, so in that case it is spinal breathing all the way through with attention cycling up and down the sushumna the whole time rather than fixed out through the brow during retention. Sambhavi (eyes up - sushumna enlivened) can be maintained throughout.

The technique works, and is one of the most powerful in the AYP tool kit for building on ecstatic conductivity to more advanced stages. The reality of that dynamic is more important than any explanation of it I can give. AYP chin pump is also much simpler than other forms found in the kriya traditions. Simplicity and effectiveness -- that is what we aim for in AYP.

I should also mention that in AYP we do not do "chakra work," including any particular focusing of attention other than to open the entire sushumna, which covers all of the spiritual neurobiology, including the chakras. In AYP we regard the detailed operations of all that to be "under the hood." We drive the car with the simple master controls (of the sushumna), and do not try and do it with our head in the gearbox (the chakras). This is discussed in several places in the lessons.

In time, chin pump becomes a very organic function, part of our natural spiritual biology. It can be very subtle at times also, not physically noticeable from the outside. The large physical movements we do with mudras, bandhas, etc. in sitting practices lead to ongoing refined activity in the nervous throughout the day which eventually becomes more powerful than the big physical movements have been. That is how it goes with rising ecstatic conductivity. Less becomes more ... it is a natural development inside us that we are cultivating with yoga practices.
