Lesson 32 - Q&A – Menstruation, yoga, and amaroli

From: Yogani
Date: Sun Jun 6, 2004 8:13am

New Members: It is recommended you read from the beginning of this tantra yoga archive, as previous lessons are prerequisite to this one. The first lesson is, "What is tantra yoga?"

Q: I have really enjoyed and learned from the wisdom you have passed on in these lessons and the main ones. How blessed we are that you are willing and able to answer so many questions whose answers have evaded us for so long.

I am wondering if you know about a tantric or yoga practice that a woman can use to minimize or temporarily eliminate menstruation. I have read in several sources that women have practiced the (Taoist?) microcosmic orbit to do so and have thereby prevented the energy loss that comes with menstruation. If you know of such a practice, is there one for celibates?

A: The effectiveness of using the Taoist microcosmic orbit (breathing) for relieving the menstrual cycle may be so, but I can't say for sure. I have not done much with the microcosmic orbit for many years because I moved to yogic spinal breathing methods, which are simple and effective for spiritual transformation. These are the methods in the lessons -- spinal breathing and spinal bastrika in particular. These, along with deep meditation and the other practices in the lessons, will gradually expand the sexual function upward in the nervous system, including an upward shift in energy flows in the menstrual cycle.

Everything in the main lessons is suitable for a celibate life, and so are the non-intercourse related methods in the tantra group (siddhasana and solo practice), which also cultivate the energies upward.

Another thing to look at that is not in the lessons so far is "amaroli," which is urine therapy. Some amazing health benefits can be achieved with it, including normalizing difficulties with menstruation. You can do some web searches on amaroli and find a lot of good information. Here is one I ran across that mentions the positive effects of amaroli on menstruation:

Additional amaroli resources can be found at:

I wish you all success on your chosen spiritual path.

The guru is in you.

Note: For detailed instructions on amaroli (urine therapy), see the Diet, Shatkarmas and Amaroli book.
For detailed instructions on the methods of tantra in relation to the broad scope of yoga practices and the enlightenment process, see the AYP Tantra book.
