I am really looking to take a break from everything for a year or two and live in a monastery or whatever anywhere in the world. Does anyone here have any experience of doing a long term silent retreat? How have your experiences been?

Many vipasana centers have month long retreats. You could sign up for such retreats. 12 of them back to back if allowed, should fulfill your wish.
