Hi all,

I am sure you have all experienced this : during practices, I have many automatic yoga movements where my neck moves so that to straigthen up the head in the same axis than the backbone.

As a scientist, it remembers me the waveguide theory.
It is as if the body was trying to optimize the passing of energy (thus waves through nerves).

Thus, the straighter, the better.

It also applies to other parts of the body : arms, fingers, etc.

Hi Apkallu, my experience is exactly the same! Also, to me this straightening has tangible automatic healing effects on my upper spine and neck - they have literally and physically improved, people even give me that feedback about my better alignment.

By the way, I think that this is very much in line with the core principle of alignment in hata yoga according to BKS Iyengar.

As kundalini awakens, this automatic straightening carries over into the everyday. I find it occurring while driving, or doing yard work. It is a mindful reminder to carry your weight evenly in your body, and on occasion, to use your less dominant limbs.

Yes, it makes you more aware of your posture, especially the spine. For a long time there was an issue in my upperback, heart area. Felt like ants in the spine, that was a strong reminder. Lots of automatic yoga happened then.
Now I have the feeling that when sit in meditation, the gravity keeps me on earth and at the same time there is a pulling upwards.

Same feelings here during DM: upper body becomes stiff like wood (although no strain is involved, not even muscular action), and the spine is kind of pulled upwards by "invisible hands" which at the same time work on my neck vertebrae like a chiropractor/ostheopath would.

I've found automatic straightening while cyclling - even when oriented low over my handlebars, I can feel the upper body posture of tadasana beginning - back straight, neck aligned but up, shoulders down toward my hips but aligned with my spine.

As an engineer I think of it like a waveguide, or a fluid conduit. Breathing, balance, smooth pedaling, and control of the bicycle all improve. - pretty amazing!
