Recently felt an interest in Christian Mysticism. Can anyone advise any good writers?

Also

Has anyone read any Meister Eckhart? Recently been drawn towards him. Any advice on books? Also does anyone know what work of Eckhart's the quote used in Jacobs Ladder comes from: "If you're frightened of dying and you're holding on, you'll see demons tearing your life away. If you've made your peace, then the demons are really angels, freeing you from the earth."
- Meister Eckhart

Additionally, anyone know any good St John of the cross work?

For a detailed scholarly history of Christian mysticism, I have found the writings of Bernard McGinn the best off the press recently.

Evelyn Underhill's writings about the history of Christian mysticism are modern classics.

Both McGinn and Underhill comment on Meister Eckhart, but the most trendy treatment of his writings is by Matthew Fox.

For John of the Cross, I recommend going straight to the sources. I read his writings with a in a class with John Welsh who wrote this commentary/introduction to his works:

Not quite Christian Mysticism, but "The Gnostic Gospels" is a good historical account of Christianity before Rome got a hold of it.

I like Jean-Yves Leloup. He's translated and commented on The Gospel of Thomas, and a few other Gnostic gospels. His bio says he's a Christian mystic, and I found his commentaries insightful.

Thank you all as always for the advice. I've gone with this for now: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Meister-Eck...21982&sr=8-2

"Meister Eckhart, from Whom God Hid Nothing: Sermons, Writings and Sayings
David O'Neal"

I'll let you know how it is.

Hi Jono,

I just saw this thread.

I also highly recommend anything by Tau Malachi - I've posted about him here at the forum, quite a bit.

You may want to check out his forum, here:

Hey Kirtanman,

Just read this and was sure I had seen that name before.

I've just got into Jed (through infinite causes but mainly your recommendation) and have finished the first book and so started reading the monster Jed-thread here (a book in itself) to see what AYPers have to say about him. Anyway, after a quick search realised that is where I had seen the name. Love Jeds writings by the way but will save my praise (which is extensive) and possibly questions for the Jed-thread .

As always, thank you.

Love
