I had a rather intense experience last night and wanted to check in regarding the need to self pace even more or rejoice. After my recent post about struggles with pleasure I heeded the advice of many wise teachers on this forum (thank you Sey, Dogboy, Blanche, BlueRaincoat, Sunyata, Cato and Stille) and Self paced further. Despite doing a good job with my twice daily practices I overdid it a little last night with some solo tantra cultivation before bed. I felt fine going to sleep but was awakened at 4 hours later with some intense Kundalini surges. This one was different as the energy didn't stay stuck in the root but moved upward. This went on for a couple hours. I became a little concerned I was about to experience a premature awakening of the crown as the energy was building and building in my head but I surrendered to the energy as I knew it wasn't something I could control. It was odd, this process felt like how I imagine child birth is for a woman. Wave after wave of pressure pushing up against an obstruction. I then experienced what I think were spontaneous yoga movements as my pelvis started tilting on its own. Then I felt a release somewhere in the lower spine and the energy in my body seemed to flow more easily. I finally was able to go back to sleep and when I awoke and did my morning meditation I could feel the energy flowing much easier up from the root to the third eye.
A couple questions.
1. Now that a significant obstruction has released is this a call for more self pacing or is this just a benefit of the practices. Other than being a little tired from not enough sleep last night I feel pretty good.
2. I experienced some temporary chest discomfort during this process. I have had similar pain in my left chest a few times during meditation over the last few months. I wondered if it is sign of another obstruction. Given my age I decided to be on the safe side and went to see my doctor and he ran a bunch of tests culminating in a cardiac stress test, just a few days ago, and they told me I am in excellent shape and my heart is fine. Having ruled out a significant heart problem I wonder if this is a part of this awakening process. Any advice on dealing with this new sensation/blockage?

Selfpace is only needed if you feel 'overloaded' during the day.

Doing daily practice will smooth out obstructions, physically, energetically, emotionally, the veils, not all within a day, not within a month, not even a year, but slowly, day by day, night by night we let go what we do not need anymore.

For the nightly surges, surrender, ride the waves.......enjoy them, without clinging to them, because remember, also this will pass....

PS Maybe this lesson might be for you, but take care not to overdo with practices, like Yogani says "the guru is in you"

Charliedog, Thank you for your advice. So far no overload during the day but I am being very mindful of overload risks as I learned from BlueRaincoats response to my last post that too much ecstatic states, even without feeling overloaded, can be a call for self pacing. I am coming to accept clearing out obstructions is going to be a slow process, but felt compelled to post this as it was the first time I actually felt a sudden change that seemed positive. Thanks for the lesson link on a different pranayama practice. I will give that a try.

Hi Interpaul,
Thank you for sharing your experience. It is in line with traditional yoga teachings which suggest that while using drugs might bring a glimpse of the beyond, it comes with a price. It is analog with having something pried from our hand before we are ready to let go, which happens naturally with regular spiritual practice. The result might be similar in some ways, but the experience is very different. Forcing ahead with drugs is less likely to take us to a stable and sustainable place.
It seems that you are playing with the control of your car, and you are finding out what it can do. Overall, a smooth ride is taking us faster ahead than an out-of-control one.

Blanche, Thank you for comments. I agree with your cautionary notes regarding drug use. I'm not sure how this applies exactly to managing sexual energies. Yogani, in his lessons on tantra, seems to encourage individuals to work from where they are suggesting attachments will ease over time. I personally feel a little stuck in that my AYP practices increase my need for sexual outlet. Given my current circumstances in a sexless marriage and prior struggles with porn, it leaves me fewer options. In doing tantric solo cultivation Yogani encourages staying in a preorgasmic place with the option of venting ~ once weekly. I had vented 2 days before this recent Kundalini surge. I would love to have a smoother ride but I am having trouble finding ways to do my AYP practices and handle the increased sexual energy. Based on your analogy with drug use, do you have any practical suggestions in my case?

This is not unusual. Whatever our personal circumstances, this is a typical stage on the journey. There is a huge store of energy intended for reproduction. Yoga is doing something very clever, redirecting that energy towards a different purpose. We try to make it as smooth as possible, but there is a transition stage when that energy gets a boost, yet the pathways are not completely clear for it to be channeled towards a higher purpose.

You need to be a little patient. Do your practice, self pace as necessary and let things unfold. Ecstatic states are not a bad thing. We don't get attached to them and we don't fight them either. As long as you are reasonably comfortable in daily activity, everything is fine.

BlueRaincoat, Thank for your reassurance. My patience has been in short supply lately with COVID-19 adding additional strain to my marriage and limiting some of my stress reducing outlets. Your words mean a lot to me and I am going to try to let go of all of the second guessing and trust in the process.

Hi Interpaul
Doing spiritual practices does not mean that we do not face the things that are not going so well in our life. Sometimes we put up with things that either need to be discussed with another (maybe your wife in that case) or if that does not work, maybe seeking consultation and help (not in the forums which are for practices) with a therapist.
The point is to improve what can be improved or changed instead with living with unresolved issues
Just sit with yourself and see if your intuition or inner silence guides you to some practical things to improve your domestic situation or residual trauma if any
all of your life aspects are interconnected and affect your well being , spiritual aspect needs spiritual practices , other aspects and problems need to be addressed and find their own improvements

Majeswari, Thank you for your comments. I agree completely. I've turned to this group for support with the spiritual practice component. My wife and I are in couple's counseling. As my inner silence grows I see the interconnectedness of all aspects of my life. AYP has been a great aid for me but it has forced me to face a lot of "obstructions" in my life.
